What is Multilingual Desktop Publishing?
Desktop publishing is the process of laying out text and visual elements to create professionally formatted documents — think brochures, manuals, catalogues, reports, and packaging. In a multilingual context, DTP takes on an additional layer of complexity: once a document has been translated, the text has changed, and so has almost everything else.
Multilingual DTP is the process of taking translated content and reformatting it within the original design template to produce a final document that:
- Reads correctly and naturally in the target language
- Maintains the visual design and brand identity of the original
- Is correctly formatted for the target market (units, date formats, reading direction, etc.)
- Is print-ready or screen-ready to the required specification
It sounds straightforward. In practice, it requires real expertise — particularly when languages behave very differently from the source.

Text expansion and contraction
Some languages take up significantly more space than English when translated. German, for instance, can run 30% longer. Finnish and Dutch tend to expand too. Conversely, languages like Chinese and Japanese are often more compact. This means entire layouts need to be reworked to accommodate text that simply doesn't fit in the original boxes, columns, or call-outs.
Right-to-left (RTL) languages
Arabic and Hebrew don't just require different fonts — they require a mirror-image rethinking of the entire layout. Text flows right to left, navigation elements switch sides, and the visual balance of the page changes fundamentally. Our DTP team has extensive experience with RTL typesetting and produces documents that look and feel native to the target language.
Special characters and diacritics
Many languages use characters not found in standard Latin-script fonts. Accents, cedillas, umlauts, and characters from Cyrillic, Greek, or extended Latin alphabets need to render correctly — and the font used in your design may not support them all. We resolve font compatibility issues as a standard part of our DTP workflow.
Complex and non-Latin scripts
Languages using CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Devanagari, Thai, Arabic, or other complex scripts require specialised typesetting knowledge. Line-breaking rules, character spacing, and script rendering all differ significantly from Latin-script documents.
Layout breaks and overflow
Headers, captions, tables, footnotes, and sidebars all need to be repositioned and reformatted when text length changes. What looked clean in English may collapse entirely in another language without careful reformatting.
